What Is Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery refers to any invasive procedure performed on your teeth, gums, jawbones, or other oral structures to restore optimum health. These procedures can restore lost oral functions and also enhance smile aesthetics. Oral surgeries are carried out by qualified dental professionals who have received special education and training in this field. At our practice, we have a team of expert oral surgeons who have years of experience dealing with complex surgical cases.

Questions About Oral Surgery

What Are The Different Types of Oral Surgery Procedures?

Minor dental concerns, like a chipped tooth, can be corrected with restorative or cosmetic procedures. However, if you are experiencing serious symptoms, you may require an invasive treatment. Our dental practice offers comprehensive oral surgery services to address all such concerns that threaten your oral health. Our services include:

  • Simple tooth extraction: It is a common procedure in which we remove a decayed, damaged, or loose tooth out of its socket. A simple extraction is beneficial if the tooth is intact and is accessible above the gum line. This procedure does not involve incisions or stitches and has a shorter recovery period.
  • Wisdom tooth extraction: If your wisdom teeth are impacted or appear at an irregular angle, they can disturb your oral functions. Our dentists can safely remove wisdom teeth using surgical techniques. Because it often involves incision placement, we will place sutures to close the gums once the procedure is complete.
  • Dental implants: Losing one or more teeth can impact your smile and oral functions. To restore missing teeth, our dentists offer dental implants that are surgically placed in the jawbone. They offer excellent aesthetics and functional stability, like natural teeth.
  • Bone grafting: Periodontal disease or tooth loss can cause deterioration of your jawbone. We can rebuild the lost bone structure using bone grafts that stimulate healthy bone production. This procedure is very beneficial for those who want dental implants but have insufficient bone structure in their jaws.

How Should I Prepare For Oral Surgery?

The thought of going through any surgical procedure can be stressful, including oral surgery. Rest assured that your care is in the best of hands at our practice. Our team will ensure that you remain comfortable throughout the treatment process. Being prepared before the surgery can ease worries, which is why our team will discuss the procedure details during the first consultation.

To prepare for the procedure, make sure to eat something a few hours before the procedure and avoid eating during that interval. If you are on prescription medications for systemic issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., take them as suggested by your physicist. After the surgery, you may need to take off from school or work for a day or two, so you can schedule the procedure accordingly.

How Long Until I Start Feeling Better After Oral Surgery?

The recovery period of an oral surgery depends on the procedure performed. If you have a simple tooth extraction, you can expect a smooth and quick recovery within 10 to 14 days. In the case of a surgical tooth extraction, the recovery period may take longer as it involves gum incision and bone removal. We will place a pressure gauze on the wound right after extraction to control bleeding. You may experience some pain or swelling during the first 48 hours, but these symptoms eventually subside as the wound heals.

Our dentists will prescribe medications for the management of post-surgical symptoms. If facial swelling occurs, you can place an ice pack on the affected side for 10 to 15 minutes. We also suggest rinsing your mouth with warm salt water a few times a day to keep the wound clean and eliminate the risk of infection.

What Foods Are Good To Eat After Oral Surgery?

After an oral surgical procedure, we recommend starting with a soft diet that is easier to chew and swallow. This is because the surgical wound remains tender for a few days, and eating a hard diet may cause discomfort. A soft diet includes items such as mashed potatoes, porridge, scrambled eggs, yogurt, milkshakes, boiled vegetables, etc. Consuming cool things during the initial days is better, as they help reduce the risk of bleeding and swelling.

Once the surgical wound begins to heal, you can slowly shift to a normal diet. Avoid eating hot, spicy, hard, or sticky foods during the recovery period. Make sure to brush your teeth twice a day to avoid contamination of the treatment site.

Can I Smoke After Having Oral Surgery?

Smoking is injurious to both oral and systemic health in more ways than you can imagine. We strictly prohibit smoking during the post-surgical period as it restricts blood flow, causes tissue irritation, and delays the healing process. It can also lead to dry socket formation, a severely painful complication of oral surgery. Avoid smoking for at least 3 to 5 days after surgery to achieve a smooth recovery.
